problems running defrag

Its really weird, but my defrag is acting up- the built in one for windows XP.

when i try running it the following error appears:

MMC cannot open c:\windows\system32\dfrg.msc
This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This also may be because you do not have sufficient rights to the file.

Ok, so the file does exist, i just copied over a new copy of it from a friends computer. i'm logged on as admin. it worked yesterday. what happened?!?!

thanks

problem is more severe than i thought;
its basically anythign that uses MMC that doesn't work! even services.msc, or anything.

I don't konw how that helps, i tried running all the msc files in the response number 2 and all of them give the same error message (mmc cannot open file...)

is there some way to reinstall MMC? or is there an update?

Try running mmc.exe, then File menu, Add\Remove Snap-in, Then click on Add button, Choose the snapin, click Add on that window then close, then OK on the last window.
