That's exactly how I do, but it didn't work. WMP gave me a "Incorrect Function" message.

no you do not need a vcd player to play vcd... You do not need any special kind of software at all, a simple CDROM drive and windows mediaplayer is all that you need...
You just do this...
Open the media player, go to archive, open file... click browse, change the file format from all mediatypes to all files, go to the folder on your cd named mpegav, double click on the .dat file that is there...
Either that or you just use explorer, go to the mpegav folder and double click on the .dat file, then you just choose mediaplayer to open the file and hit ok...
That will play the vcd just fine...
