Problems playing CD audio...

I just got this email from my dad about his new system (I built for him). I wasn't having any problems, but apparently he is...

System specs:

WinXP
Celeron 800@1.12ghz (100@133)
15gb HD
Samsung CDR (16x/10x/32x)
Lite-on DVD (16x)
Phillips Rhythmic Edge Sound Card

Apparently, it is having problems playing audio CDs. When he puts CDs in the DVD drive (I have played DVDs, and they worked), the system hangs entirely. When he plays CDs in the CDR drive, this problem...

> uh... not so good yet. If I put in a CD (not in the DVD bay) Pink Floyd...
> and it plays about 2 minutes of any song and then hangs!!!! And I bought
> some nice new skeakers for it yesterday. Grrrr! Ideas???

Any ideas?

I had some strange issues with Windows 2000 when playing audio CD's, they might be the same thing...

Windows CD player would work fine, but WMP would skip, freeze, & generally screw over any CD that was put in it.

Turns out CD player defaults to analog audio (via the CD audio cable) while WMP defaults to digital audio via the IDE interface. Switched WMP to use analog audio, & the problem(s) disappeared.

Worth a shot. Find out what CD player software he's using.
