problems overclocking

i bought a athlon barton 2500 and also bought the unlocking kit from frozen cpu. i see lots of people overclocking to 3200+ but mine won't even get close. i was running at 12.5 at 180 and everything seemed fine but then my computer just shutdown. i have an Abit board nf7-s with a copper heatsink and a huge fan on the processor. i think the temp was only at max 45 C of the processor. i have a 400x power supply. what seems to be the problem?? maybe the ram??

Wow, tell us more and maybe we can help. What were your voltages while under load? What ram are you using? Did you reinstall Windows when you changed motherboards, etc.

i reinstalled windows when i put the new processor in but i overclocked it after that not before i reinstalled

sounds like my fans are speeding up and down while i play games

By chance did you write down the stepping # on your cpu before you installed it?

Also it might be your memory; why don't you eliminate that as a possibility by running it at 60% for a little while? It'll mess up your performance but that might be it. From what I understand (never owned it) there's samsung and samsung. But you're already past the stock speed of that memory. Might try upping the vdimm too a tad

hm i think maybe the ram might be holding you back.. pc2700 won't always OC to pc3200 speeds

YOu need to overclock you cpu and memory independently. For example, you need to find the limits on your memory and processor. Set your memory divider to a value that doesn't overclock your memory and then test your cpu. You'll most likely need to buy some pc3200 or higher to overclock that system so I would buy some new memory first. And don't skimp on the power supply, if you don't have a high-quality one you're system will be unstable.

If you were getting fans whining up and down and they are not thermal controlled then it may likely be power related...What do your 3.3 and 5v rails report at idle and under some load???

according to winbond the 3.3 and the 5v rails appear pretty much the same as my first post. maybe a few .01 fluxuations in the +5v but everything else stays constant.

right now it's running stable at core speed of 1993mhz FSB at 181.2 which is bus speed of 362mhz.

ok i raised the voltage to 1.8 and overclocked to 3200+ and set the ram at auto speed. everything booted this time. the ram read 333mhz which is standard. when windows went to load up tho it said a file was corrupt or missing. does this basically mean i just need to reinstall windows with it overclocked or is 3200 gonna corrupt data?

Usually when windows fails and give you that blue screen (Im assuming you got the blue screen), its memory related.. Or so I would think.

it wasn't a blue screen, it just was black screen before windows opened up and said that. i lowered the overclock back to what i originally had it at and windows loads fine

That means you'll need some PC3200 ram to be able to hit 3200+. It seems like once you get some though, you'll be stable at 2.2ghz.

yea- seems to be memory limited. get some decent PC3200/PC3500 or PC3700 for some good overhead. don't skimp on memory. get some BH5/CH5 memory chips. NF7's love it, and it OC's well. check the FS/FT forum as it is not readily available these days.

edit- did you up the vdimm voltage to 2.9+?? you need more voltage on the memory to OC it. set chipset and AGP voltages to 1.7v also.
