Ok, having some problems overclocking my 3000 Venice. I would be extremely happy to get to 2.2 if possible. I tried o'c and get get it to even go past POST at 2.0 GHz though. Here is my rig: A8N-E, 1gig (2x512) of corsair value select, 3000+ venice, stock heatsink, plenty of casefans. I know these components (espcialy ram) are not made for overclocking very good but i need 2.2 ghz or at least 2.0.

Here is what I have tried: I set my FSB to 223 (x multiplier of 9 gives me 2000) but locked up during Post. Next, I did the same thing but lowered the HTT to 4? Still same result.

Obviously I dont' know much about o'cing. I have read the forums but I must be missing the "big picture of things" cause I know i'm not doing something right. Can someone walk me through o'c on this mobo? I would greatly appreciate it!

You need to use a memory divider. When you increase the FSB you are also overclocking the ram, and VS doesn't OC for crap. Use the DDR333/166 divider up to about 240-245fsb, if you go higher use the DDR266/133 divider

OK here is waht i need to know how does the FSB and cpu multiplier and the HTT and the memory divider all make the cpu's speed? back in the athlon XP days it was muli X FSB so dang easy. Now I don't understand this memory divider and HTT crap! how do they equate into the situation? I'm gonna try ur advice real quick....

HT(Hypertransport) = FSB(HTT) x Ht multi (200x5=1000), lower the ht multi to keep under 1000 when raising the FSB

CPU speed = FSB(HTT) x CPU multi (200x9=1800 or 1.8ghz)

Ram speed = FSB(HTT) x divider (200 x 1:1(200 or DDR400)=200mhz DDR400

divider settings(max memory clock) under ddr settings below the cpu config page

DDR400 = 1:1 runs ram equal to FSB
DDR333 = 6:5 runs ram at 5/6th the FSB
DDR266 = 3:2 runs ram at 2/3rds the FSB
DDR200 = 2:1 runs ram at 1/2 the FSB

Because you need to set the ddr lower than 200 when you are raising the 'fsb' past 200. You should also lower your HTT multiplier to 4 (3 if your fsb ends up above 250).

Running ram too slow can also cause the machine not to boot. I would try the DDR333 divider and FSB of 240 and see if that will boot, if not bump the CPU volts up a notch

ok, I have the mulit at 9, FSB at 223, DDR (Divider) at 200 and HTT at 4X. Boots perfect but it still shows up as 1800 MHz... I'm sure I saved! CPU-Z confirms this. What am I doing wrong?

On the Asus boards

DDR400=200
DDR333=166
DDR266=133
DDR200=100

If I understood him correctly he tried the DDR200 or 100 divider, which at 223 would run ram at 111.5mhz /DDR223 (really slow)

The board isn't liking the settings, so it's reverting to defaults

Try DDR333 and FSB of 240mhz

ok, moved it to DDR 333 and the FSB to 240 and it locked up, tried 230, same thing. THen i moved it back to 223 and it boots. Still show only 1813.5 MHz CPUz also shows the HTT at 201 Mhz. The Memory frquency went from 100 to 165 though!

Thats odd

Are you using the latest bios?

What PS are you using?, overclocking does take more juice your PS might not be up to the task

yup, using the latest bios. My PSU is a Thermaltake purepower. its 480 Watts cost about $60 last year. Its only a 20 pin cable to a 24 pin board... that won't make a diff will it?

sorry for double post. I have never had any problems with the psu... surely it's not the problem. Is there something i'm doing wrong? The speed hasn't changed one bit, If i mess with setting it should go either up or down but it has remained the same.. is there somethign i could of overlooked?

I agree that PS should be good enough. It's possible that your PCI bus isn't locked, check the PCI clock setting on the jumper free page and make sure it's set to 33.33mhz. You can also download ClockgenNF4, which is a window overclocking tool that shows your FSB/PCIE/PCI/Ram speeds. Clockgen will show if your PCI buss is locked, if you increase the FSB and the PCI goes above 33.33mhz its not locked and thats your problem.

I also use clockgen to test new O/C settings, without having to reboot everytime

ok, I the pci was set to "auto" or something like that. Anyways i set it to 33.33 and i'm still showing cpu at 1813.5 MHz. HTT at 201.mhz and under Memory>timings>frequency is 164.9

Any ideas? I read the quick and dirty guide but didnt' find any answers....
