Problems OCing XP 2400+

Hi, i have a ABIT KV& motherboard and an Athlon XP 2400+ processor with PC3200 memory, i was trying to raise the FSB but the multiplier is locked, i tought that this ABIT MB unlocked the multiplier of this processor, is this correct? if not, where i can find a good guide to unlock the multiplier?

The processor model number starts with AXDA and finish with KV3C (Hope this helps).

The chip itself has to be unlocked before the mobo can adjust the multiplier settings. Did you just buy this CPU? All the mobiles are unlocked... woulda coulda shoulda.

I bought it recently, i wasnt supposed to change the MOBO, but i finally changed it, now i have 400mhz memory and i cant use it. I could sell the microprocessor, but there are no mobiles here (im in Argentina), i could buy a Sempron 2400+, but i have to overclock it to reach the 2Ghz of my actual 2400+. I could also unlock the chip i have, can i reach 2Ghz (10x200mhz) with my KV7? Thanks.
 
There is a 2500+ Barton on sale unlocked out of the box, is this true? Will i be able to run this on 200mhz FSB with my ABIT KV7 MB? Please, help.
 
What about the Barton 2500+, it's true that's is unlocked from factory? Here's the product ID:

I think that all the processors that amd is producing except the mobile ones are locked. When the xp first came out is was unlocked but amd figured things out and now they lock the new ones. This is just what I have heard.

Look, forget about trying to unlock your current CPU. The Speed Strip linked above won't do it. See the fine print near the bottom of product details.

The big picture is that AMD DESKTOP cpu's produced after week 39 of 2003 are uber-locked from the factory. In fact some earlier (started to show up in week 34 model's IIRC) one's were too. The XP mobile's, however, are NOT locked. This is what you want to purchase for OCing, unless you find an older (used?) Barton for sale.

BTW, You are not listing all of the stepping code, the date of manufacture is missing. So can't say if the Barton (desktop) you mention would be factory locked or not.

???, these are two different things. Whether the multi is liocked or not has nothing to do with raising the FSB. You CAN raise the FSB even though the multi is locked.

I see you are from Argentina and there are no mobiles there. So, if you post the full stepping code I will look at it and see the date of manufacture. EDIT, the date of manufacture should be the numbers listed right after "AQUCA"

Sure you can, or at least give it a try. From a review I just read that mobo looks like a decent OC'er. Raise your FSB in increaments and see if you can reach 200 FSB.

Increase the vcore (voltage to cpu) as needed and install Motherboard Monitor 5 so you can keep an eye on the temps.

I didnt read the fine print, guess I need glasses. Thanx for the clarification Fern. Maybe you can help me since you know a lot about overclocking. I think Im having a memory problem, not real sure though. Does the blue screen of death sound familiar? Im using two sticks of 256 buffalo, cas L 3. Any help would be apprieciated.
 
Mega works, ever wonder why the mutiplier is so high on intel processors? AMD gets more work done per clock cycle. Im not sayin it wont be stable, just sayin it would idealy be faster by raising the fsb instead of the muti. My 2600+ runs at 200x11.5 stable. 2.31ghz. runs along side a p4 3.2ghz with no problem. Intels fsb before the mutiplier is real low, just have real high mutipliers That is why INTEL suxxxxxxxxxx.
 
The problem in raising the fsb is... that the MB has no AGP/PCI lock, i've tried 166mhz FSB(and 165) and it wont POST (with the divider in 5:2:1). Besides that, without overclocking i have very high temps... 70-75C system temp, and 58-59C for the CPU, i think it's a monitoring fault being the system hotter than the CPU, but the heat sink is hot to touch, so i guess the CPU reading could be ok, it doesnt crash at load till now. Im thinking of buying a XP-M 2200+ (35w) directly from USA, what do you think of that? Should i exchange the mobo for this issue? Thanks.

Some info: the case has 3 80mm fans, and there's no way 70C in it.
 
I have a soyo kt880 dragon 2 mobo with the same problem(no agp/pci lock). The only way I have been able to over clock is to raise the fsb in big jumps, like 166 to 200. The agp and pci end up overclocked if I raise it in small incraments. The only way to raise it in small steps is to underclock the agp and pci, like using 6 as your devider. I dont think that is a very good idea though. At the price of mobos you have to make a choice. A mobo is cheaper but the processor is still outdated. Not sure how much money you are willing to spend but if it was my choice I would try to get an athlon 64 combo deal. Just my opinion though. I made the same mistake. I should have got a 64 instead of upgrading my mobo. About your temps, the chassis temp has to be wrong. You will rarely see a chassis temp higher than the cpu. What are you using to check your temps? I dont trust mbm 5. I have had little luck with it. See if your mobo manufacturer has software that checks temp.
 
i use ABIT FANEQ, and that's what i get. The chassis temp has to be wrong, but the CPU temp seems real to me, the heatsink is hot to touch so i guess it has to be 50C or more. Ill check the temps in the BIOS from a cold boot and see what does it shows.
 
From a cold boot the PWM temp is 30C and starts to raise to 50C in the BIOS, is always 10-20C more than the CPU temp, where is this temp measured? in the NB?

Run Memtest86 to test the ram.

What kind of ram (example pc3200) at what speed (ex. FSB 200 mhz), and what vdimm (voltage to ram)?

Hey i found that the FAQ in the ABIT site for my MB says that is normal because of the position of the sensor or something like that... so im not worried anymore about the PWM temp. Thanks to everybody, and ill keep looking for that mobile.

Buffalo PC 3200, my voltage is set to auto in the bios(2.6v) I left the timing set to "by spd"
I removed a modem I had recently installed and the bsod has gone away since then, not sure if they were related or not. I am going to purchase some corsair xms this weekend, need this ram for another machine Im putting together.
 
Daryl, what type of cpu cooler are you using? Those temps sound hot to me. If im not mistaked the cpu temp is checked from the cpu core. I use a zalman 7000a and my temps never get over 42 degrees, unless im folding or doing something that uses 100% of my processor. Sure sounds hot to me.
