Is this "lactose intolerant" and why the hell did i devlop it. I can eat a sandwich with cheese on it with no problems.

/Sadly im eatting my bowl of ice cream now which means i will have a upset stomach with the worst thing that comes after it the bathroom and duh duh da da da Runs.

I am exactly the same way, I used to drink 2-4 glasses of milk a day. Now any milk makes me sick. I stopped eating cerial about 9 years ago, and don't ever have milk in the fridge. How old are you? It started for me about 17-18.

I started having trouble with drinking milk in my junior year of high school. I find that if I eat something with the milk I can tolerate it better.

From what I understand, lactose is a sugar that's in milk. Lactase is the enzyme that's required for humans to digest the sugar and break it down into usable stuff. When you're born, you have lots of lactase, to digest mommy's milk or baby's formula. But as people grow up, you can actually lose this enzyme, as it isn't critical to your health and such. So without this enzyme, your body just doesn't digest the lactose in milk. That gives it to bacteria in your stomach who have a field day with it. They give off lots of gas and waste of their own, which gives you da runs. Nothing you can do about it, except I know there are supplements that provide this enzyme, so you can actually take a pill before you drink milk and it'll be happy.

My brother was your age when he became lactose intolerant.

I'm about 3 quarters the way of being LT myself. From what I know, it happens to a lot of adults. In fact as you get older you're not supposed to drink as much milk anyways.

I have been highly lactose intolerant for 3 years now. I became so when I was 17. Whenever I eat dairy products I feel swollen and bloated. I usually get cramps and must frequently use the restroom. If I have more than a tablespoon or so of milk and don't take a Lactaid pill then I usually spend about 7 hours curled up in a ball in bed.
If the lactaid pills don't do anything for you....

Amy's is a brand of 'health' food that makes lactose free pizza, lasagna, and microwave burritos. -quite tasty.
Breyers makes a lactose free vanilla ice cream -decent.
Vanilla soy milk tastes so much better to me than regular milk ever has.

If you go to a health food store near you they will have numerous lactose/dairy free foods most likely including several kinds of ice cream (Rice Dream and or soy derived products), Cooking ingredients and frozen foods.

Good Luck.

PS: If you go to the doctor to get 'official lactose intolerance tests' done, they're likely to pump you full of milk and see if you die or not.

Many people become lactose intolerant as they grow older. My brother and I both became lactose intolerant around the time we entered college. I had many friends who had the same experience. I can handle a little bit of ice gream, but not much beyond that. Cheese is generally OK because it is suppose to have very little lactose. Dryer's has a lactose free vanilla ice cream if that is important. There are always the Lactaid pills.

Lactose intolerance varies widely depending on race:

African American (75%)
Native Americans (75%)
Asian-Americans (90%)
Mexican-American (53%)
much less common in European descent (less than 15%)

Common symptoms include nausea, cramps, bloating, gas, and diarrhea, which begin about 30 minutes to 2 hours after eating or drinking foods containing lactose. The severity of symptoms varies depending on the amount of lactose each individual can tolerate. Recent studies have found that many people who have lactose intolerance can have one serving of milk with a meal or two servings of milk per day, at separate times, without experiencing symptoms. People also may be able to tolerate food like aged cheese, which has less lactose, or yogurt, which has bacteria that digests lactose.

If you are lactose intolerant and still want to consume dairy, you can purchase lactase enzyme tablets over-the-counter to take prior to eating or with dairy products to help with digestion.

I've been lactose intolerant since I was very young, although it has become more pronounced as I have gotten a little older. Anyways, even the "Lactaid" brand pills don't stop my reaction now.

What I've been using for the past 6 months or so is the "Lactase with Rennin" supplement that they sell at Trader Joe's. As far as I'm concerned, these pills are waaaay better than Lactaid. I guess the rennin helps to coagulate milk, and it's found in the stomachs of young nursing animals. I can actually eat a decent amount of dairy with these things, so grab 'em and give 'em a try if you have a Trader Joe's near you.

Didn't the Vikings share a meal with native Americans including giving them cow's milk? It didn't sit well with them and they hurled their meals, thinking the Vikings were trying to posision them. The after dinner fracas got a bit bloody.
