Problems installing Windows on new build

Hey there... I just put together my new build:
Althlon 64 FX 55
DFI Lanparty Ultra
2gig OCZ DDR memory
Seagate Barracuda 300gig HD
EVGA 7900GTO
7 in 1 Floppy
dvd burner

I have windows 98 and then i purchased a win98-Win xp upgrade. The computer boots up and I am able to go into the bios with no issues. I started with the WIN 98 boot disk and that works normally. The menu comes up where I can choose between formatting my HD and installing win 98 or just installing win 98 without a format. Either way I go it does a system test and tells me the following:
"Please wait while setup initializes.
Scanning system registry...
Cannot creat temporary directory, if you have HPFS or NTFS installed on your hard drive you will need to create an MS-Dos boot partition to set up windows." It then leaves me at the E:/> prompt.

What can I do to install windows? These are brand new parts and I never installed anything on the hard drive/ I do not know how to creat a ms dos partition and I wouldnt know what to do after I created one. Thanks for the help.

1) Set bios to boot from cdrom first
2) Insert XP cd
3) Hit any key when prompted to start XP install
4) XP will prompt you to insert Win98 cd to verify ownership, then you put the XP cd back in to continue setup
5) Partition and format the drive during setup

First look for a friend and ask him or she to write a CD of disk tools from seagate to you, for use to create partitions of a maximum of 65536MB FAT32, you can install win 98 after this.
Or then create a simple partition of maximun 65536MB ( Recomended 32768 ) in your HDD, in another computer.
The second step is install XP, and the third is download from seagate the 48bitLBA register, which will enable volumes larger than 137GB on Windows XP.
Now in the Administrrative Tools you can create an extended or primary partition with the rest of space.

There is no way to start using FAT 32 with partitions larger than 64GB,
If you want to do a clean Install for the Upgrade version of XP, Please use disk manager from Seagate in a CD or another computer with 48Bit LBA enabled to create a simgle partition, altough in your instalation you will only be able to see 137GB, after all you can of course enable the 48Bit LBA and see your hard drive entire 300 GB as one with XP.

I Recomend use of 2 HDDs, one with 120GB Maximum and other with the volume you find usefull, until 2TB per HD. One for system One for Docs.

greylica, welcome to AnandTech. You gave some decent advice but we might need to clarify a few things.

80GB fdisk fix on a win98/me bootdiskette is one solution, Seagate DiscWizard (or other HDD mfg's tools) is another. Even then I don't see why the OP would use Fat32 on a new build w/ XP when ntfs is a better solution.

If his XP upgrade disc has sp2 integrated then he'll see the full capacity of the drive.

wow i wish i knew it was that simple..thanks all...WinXP seems to be up and running I will worry about the rest of the setup tomorrow since it's late thanks!!
