Problems installing on XP

Hello,

I'm running Windows XP on:

PIII 600
512 SDRAM
100 GB HD (partitioned for boot and data)
Internal Zip Drive
SAMSUNG DVD-ROM
TEAC 24/10/40 CD-RW

I've discovered that I get errors when trying to install programs off CDs. If I insert the Adobe CD the error says that Adobe Autorun has encountered a problem; asks to send the problem to microsoft.

With other CDs (such as Flash 5), it says "The contents of this file cannot be unpacked. The executable you are attempting to run has been corrupted."

These CDs work on other XP computers. Also, I've copied the CD fileset to the hard drive and tried to install from there, but I get the same errors.

I even stuck in my XP CD, but when I tried to install something (additional compenents just to try), it gave me the same error after it extracted the files.

I'm thinking the windows installer is corrupted? The computer runs fine it seems; it just won't install anything from a CD. I say from a CD because I seem to be able to run install files I have on my HD such as Mozilla. Also, as another test, I was able to install PCFriendly from a DVD. But I checked the modified date on msi.dll and there's no change.

I should note that this is the first time that I've tried to install something on XP from a CD. So this problem may have been there since I installed XP (mid-February), but I have no tests to say either way.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Brian

<< It sounds to me like your CD-ROM drive is bad. >>

I don't think it's the drive; it works fine with everything else. I've burned with it numerous times with no problems. Also, the installations fail at the same point everytime, and all these programs use the InstallShield instead of another alternate installer method.

Has anyone heard of the InstallShield being corrupted?

Thanks,
Brian

Maybe WinXP is corrupted in some way that it interprets files off CD wrong?
If you have another computer, a hub, and some ethernet cable, you can share the CD Drive on the other computer, and try to run CD's through the other computer. Then if the programs install okay, you'll know that the CD Drive is faulty...

or you could use plug another CD Rom drive into your system ....

If your errors continue with the other cd drive, then you'll know that WinXP is corrupted...

good luck!
