problems installing DVD writer, need help

I just removed my LiteOn CD burner & replaced it with a LiteOn DVD burner. Before swapping devices I uninstalled the versions of Nero & power DVD that came with the CD burner. I also uninstalled the CD burner in device manager. The DVD burner then installed fine in device manager after rebooting. I then installed the versions of Nero & power DVD that came with the DVD burner. PROBLEMS: after all this all the AVI video files on my HDD would play audio but no video. If I put a DVD movie in the drive I get video but no sound. If I put a music CD in it plays normally.
I then used system restore to get back to where I was before all this. Now my AVI files on my HDD play normally, but still no sound with DVD movies. Also, I am back to my old version of Nero & power DVD is disabled.
The drive works! I can back up files to DVD ok (well at least before I used system restore I could. haven't tried it since). Everything was fine before I did all this!!
Any ideas what is wrong? I am on windows XP, SP2
Any help appreciated, thanks!!!
 
Also, after I installed the new versions of Nero & power DVD the PC seemed a bit slow when launching My Computer, DVD drive, etc. After I used sytem resore (as above) the system is no longer slow but the above problems persist. Any ideas??
