Every so often my computer would just lock up. I have 1.2 Ghz athlon, and 512MB of ram. Any ideas what would cause that?

What programs are you running?

No problem with XP here with a KT7-RAID, 1.1 GHz Athlon, and 512MB RAM.
Sorry I can't be more help, but this doesn't seem like a problem solely due to
the OS.

Have exactly the same config. KT7-Raid, 1.2 Ghz, 512MB crucial pc133 ram. I've run win me for ages with no problems. now that i'm running xp it locks up once in a while. I wonder if it's because I disconnected the fan from MB chipset. It has been disconnected for a while though.

i have a kt7a-raid, 1.33ghz tbird with xp and 512MB crucial as well and there are no lockups. check for driver issues, or programs that are causing instabilities.

-Do you have the latest chipset drivers and BIOS for your motherboard?
-Any overclocks?
-Was it a clean install of Windows XP?
-How strong and good is your power supply?
-How is your cooling and how are your system temps?

up because, I just did a fresh install onto a KT7 w/Duron 1Ghz, and WinXp locks up when it boots 4 out of 5 times, locks up when I do anything, locks up when a screen saver starts. WinXP gives me a headache. Curse you Bill Gates!!! Anyone have any advice?

I tried WinXP home in January with my KT7 and 1ghz Athlon.....awful.....crash after crash, sending error reports every 30 mins. It was a clean install. So I reformatted installed Windows 2000 and it has not crashed since and is still excellent after changing boards and processor.

p.s: We have a Dell laptop at work that loves XP....running very smooth, I guess certain combos have bad results!

- Yes, it was a clean install.
- No overclocks.
- All the drivers are lattest (except for the bios, which is 1 version old)
- 300W antec power supply.
- System temps seem to be pretty low. Cpu around 50C and chipset around 30C

Most of the time (if not everytime) the system locks up when I'm browsing in IE. It can happen twice in one day, and then won't happen for another 2 or 3 days. Also, once out of every 50 times the system locks up when booting. Other than that no other problems, no crashes or anything else.

KT7A w/ 1.33 T-Bird & 512MB (2 x 256) of Crucial on winXP Pro and no probs. But if I remember correctly it locked up once or twice long time ago. BIOS update must of solved it :).

IF.. its a OS issue I remember Microsoft released a compatability 'hot fix' for XP that was supposed to fix the 'system hangs at starup' or something like that....updated something back in April that fixed a small problem I had.
May have been a 'system recovered from error message' update....

Hope that helps.

so those of you who have a KT7(or similiar) a BIOS update fixed these problems? I am running I think the first BIOS with the MB 5/01, I am flashing today I think. Just have to find a good reliable guide to do it with

I think it was either a BIOS update or WinXP latest update (or compatiblity issue or something like that) for me.
Also check your memory. If it's not a brand name, ie. Crucial, Mushkin, etc., make sure it's compatible CAS2 and it can run 4-WayInterleaving or 2 way somethign like it if you got 2 sticks. I had Kingston RAM before and couldn't run CAS2 and that Interleaving thing for $hit. PC kept locking up or rebooting.

This is my system:
Abit KT7 (BIOS from 5/01)
Radeon 7000 32mb vid card
Crucial 512mb RAM cl3
Sound Blaster Live
Aopen 56k Modem

I have all the XP drivers installed for Video, Sound. Modem.

last night I downloaded the 4in1 Via drivers and installed, mistake that was, it made XP impossible to use. I couldn't access windows explorer, my computer, Adrive, nothing. Could not fix it. I had to reinstall the OS. Any help would be great!

Just updated the BIOS(7N) and no crashes yet, been running for 20 minutes straight.
