Problems imaging with tdk 16x

Ok I'm here to hopefully clear up some of my problems lately with burning. With nero when I try and image "some" protected games it will freeze, and I will then close the program. If this wern't enough it removes both my burner AND my cd rom from use. When I try clone cd It will usually image slowly (I've played with every option) and the burn is worthless. Even if the image is speedy on clone cd, I cannot seem to get a burn that works from it. Nero does the whole "hide and seek cd roms thing" on certain games, so Im lost. This is a bizare problem, and I have no idea whats going on really. Some things I can burn perfect, others I cannot. Is the tdk 16x a bad choice for burning a variety of software? If so what is a decent alternative with comparable speed (12xish). I have heard that the phillips burners will read and burn just about anything. I was also thinking I might need a Plextor cdrom, something that is able to read these nasty discs filled with bad sector upon bad sector, any ideas, please help hehe, im a dummy.
