Since reformatting windows I've experienced several software anomalies that just went away on their own. What causes this? I almost prefer solving a problem myself to having it just cease on its own.

You're gonna have to be a tad more specific. There's a zillion things that change when you reinstall. There might have been conflicting dlls (when one program installation overwrites a dll with a new version but something else still wanted the old version). There were probably things that you tweaked and then forgot about. It's possible you had some spyware before that obviously won't be present after the reinstall. Maybe something screwed up on your old system and left something in an inconsistent state (windows isn't perfect) and that problem is corrected now.

Like after I reformatted I got a recurrence of an old pre-format problem, the BSOD on shutdown. And then my drive wasn't recognized in My Computer and now suddenly it is.
