I'm having a bit of a problem getting my lan working the way I want it. I have 2 machines in the lan, connected by an 8 port Intel switch. The primary machine (with cable connection) is running Win2k Pro SP1, while the second pc is running Win98se. Currently, the LAN is working to a degree. I am able to ping both ways and have ICS working fine.

The problem comes with "My Network Places"(MNP) and "Network Neighborhood"(NN) (depending on which OS you are referring to). On the Win2k box, I am unable to get either box to show up in MNP. When I try and open up "Computers near me", it times out saying that the workgroup is not accessible.

On the win98se box, NN opens up empty (neither box shown). If I try and go to "Entire Network", it says it's "Unable to Browse Network. The network is not accessible."

The workgroup is the same on both machines.

Any idea what the problem is?

I'll look into that, but that doesn't explain why I'm unable to get this running using TCP/IP. Or why I can't get either computer to show up on it's own network...

It's not tcp/ip's job to discover other computers. It's netbuie's. it will ARP a machine and discover it on your network. You can setup WINS to do it under tcp/ip. but I don't think you have a wins server.

Okay, I've added the NetBeui protocol to both machines. I am now able to see and browse both machines on the Win2k machine, but am still unable to see either machine from the Win98se box. I've tried setting NetBeui as the default protocol, but that didn't seem to make a difference.

Any ideas now?

Thanks for the help so far...

make sure you have an account setup on that win2k machine for the 98 machine. i guess you will have to logon to the 2k machine from the 98 machine. then you should be able to see your win2k machine on your 98 machine.. dang that's alot of machines.
