problems getting internet working on networked PC

We have two computers networked together via a Router and ethernet cards. Normal set up - PC 1 (running Windows 98) and PC 2 (running Windows Me) connected to router, cable modem also connected to router. The network is set up on both computers, and works fine. PC1 can access the internet and can ping PC 2 but PC 2 cannot ping PC 1 or access the internet! However both can access each others files.

Cannot for the life of me figure out why this is the case, the IP address are different but gateway etc are the same as they should be. TCP/IP settings (protocols etc) are the same on both computers.

Any help or advice appreciated!

Make sure "Client for Microsoft Networks" is being used in Network Properties of PC1 and 2. Also check the bindings of TCP/IP protocol in PC2. Make sure that you are not using Net Beiu protocol on either PC

Actually, as long as you have TCP/IP, NETBEUI will not do any harm, and frequently solves computer browsing issues on the LAN. I have NETBEUI on all the machines here, has no effect on Internet connectivity.

disabled firewall on PC 2 - no joy :( Am wondering if its something to do with having dial up connections set up? Maybe the computer thinks there should be a dial up connection and as there isn't, isn't recognising the cable modem? I have no idea!

all the TCP/IP settings on PC 2 seem to be correct (they are the same as on PC1) - we have the microsoft client set up, correct protocols etc. Thing is, if those settings weren't right, the network wouldn't work either would it? But the network is fine! Its only the internet that isn't working.

Try Un-installing TCP/IP protocol in your LAN properties, then Re-install the TCP/IP protocol. Then run the Internet Connection Wizard under Internet Explorer Tools/Internet Options/Connections tab and see if that helps. I did this once and it repaired my problem...
