i have a maxtor 80gb firewire hd (thanks hotdeals and staples:)) running off a maxtor 1394 controller card. i also just purchased a maxtor 80gb ide hd on the staples deal again, and in formatting the new hd through xp start up, i accidentally deleted the firewire drive and can't get it back at all. i am not asking for the data back, its nothing i can't replace, but i can not get the drive to format or recognize now.
when running format in explorer, it will not be able to complete format, in both quick format and regular format.
when i go through disk management, and repartition the space, i cannot get it to format either, although it will format all the way to 99%, then fail at the very end.
when going back through the xp setup to format and partition, then install xp, it will not recognize the drive - it will show it as able to be partitioned and setup, but when i go to set up xp on it just to get it to format, it will not go, giving me this message:
'your computers startup prog cannot gain access to the disk containing the partition or free space you chose. setup cannot install xp on this hard disk
this lack of access is not necessarily indicative of an error cond., for example disks attached to a scsi adapter that wasn't installed by tyour pc manu. or a secondary hd controller are typically not visible to the startup program unless special software is used.
on x86 based pcs, this message may indicate a prob. w/ CMOS drive type settings. see disk controller doc. for more info....

no utilities program can diagnose anything wrong with it, mainly because the drive isn't formatted, so those are no help.
the firewire controller says it is working fine through device manager and there are no newer drivers that i can find for it.
i really don't think this drive is fried, as it was working perfectly fine before i accidentally deleted it, so any other help would be greatly appreciated

thanks in advance!

I have that same 80GB firewire drive. Will device manager let you partition the firewire drive? I had a problem formatting my external USB2.0 drive, it would fail halfway through. I don't know what I eventually did, it just finally worked. I'm afraid I don't have any ideas. Could you try uninstalling (through Device Manager) the firewire drive, then rebooting and letting Windows detect it again?

may not be exactly the same, but here is what I had..

I had regular 40GB HD in Generic external enclosure.
I had problem formatting the HD via firewire card, and later realized that XP see my Sony firewire card as part of "NETWORK ADAPTERS".

I disable "1394 connection" in "Network Connection". (NOT device manager) Then everything work out fine.

The drive should not be fried. Try this . . . remove the drive from the Firewire enclosure and connect it as a normal IDE drive (that's what it really is inside.) Then you can format it or anything else. The problem is probably in your Maxtor 1394 interface and/or drivers.
