Problems Editing With VirtualDub

Hey guys. I'm having trouble editing some video I captured. I have a TV2000XP Expert. I captured a TV show into MPEG-1. I am trying to edit out the commercials using VirtualDub. I make a selection of the commercials and delete it. However, when I save it and compress it, the audio sync is WAY off. The part where I cut out leaves behind about 4 seconds of audio at the end of what I deleted.

Example: Commercial goes "...XXX, tonight at 8 on TBS" and then the show "Audience clapping"

Well, the commercial is gone, but where the audience should be clapping is "Tonight at 8 on TBS..." and then clapping. I cannot figure out why this happens.

if you have adobe preimere or premiere elements, you can change it... not sure about other programs.

I downloaded the trial of Premiere...loaded the video...couldn't figure out what the F to do, so I said forget it...

Any suggestions for other free editing programs like VDub that might get the job done?

Oh, one other note, when I open the compressed AVI file, VDub says something to the extent of.. "VirtualDub has detected an incorrectly compressed CBR stream...blah blah" 😕 When I select the audio compression, I don't have any good codecs so I chose the Microsoft ADPCM codec..could that cause it? I kind of doubt it because I actually captured one other episode before and it edited out fine and was all in sync.

You might want to check the guides here. Virtualdub is a great tool, but there a better methods to accomplish what you want to do.

Read the guides in that link...thought that might be the problem.

Downloaded VDub-MP3, no go...scanned the file for bad frames, it said all frames were good...What in the hell is causing this?

EDIT: Tried using MPEG2VCR and...surprise...no problem with audio sync! Hopefully it will do what I need it to from now on 🙂

Are you sure the audio sync problem is not in the original mpeg1 file that you captured to?

Yes bamacre, when I play the original file the audio is perfectly in sync throughout the show. I seem to have solved it though, read edit on post above.

is premiere elements much easier to learn ? I didn't know what the F to do with Premiere 7 either.

Sorry, didn't mean to ask the obvious, or to insult your intelligence. The reason I asked was because I used to do this kinda stuff with an ATI TV Wonder card, and had problems with audio syning, but after a few months of it working fine. I thought it was Vdub, but it turned out to be the capturing process. I hated that card, went bad, returned it to ATI, and the rma'd never worked at all. The image quality sucked too.
