Problems cooling P4 2.8C with stock cooling!

I've got a Gigabyte IK1100 and P4 2.8C with stock intel cooling and my temperature is really high. It idles usually between 35 and 45 but when I am using it, the temp can get up to 65 and 70 degrees! I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I've also got a Thermaltake Xaser III case with 7 fans in it so I'm really not sure what's going on. The CPU fan speed seems to be about 2400 rpm usually and I'm assuming this is normal.

As for installing the CPU, I placed it on the board, put the intel heatsink and fan on top of it and clamped it down. That's all the instructions said to do and I thought this would be fine as long as I wasn't overclocking.

The weird thing is, my buddy just built the same computer (same mobo and chip etc) and he's getting high temperatures up in the 55-65 range. What's going on here?!

Thanks!

What are you guys using to monitor the temps?

The fact that your CPU fan is sitting at 2400 RPM tells me that all is well. Try using something like: MBM It sounds like you installed the HSF correctly; there's really nothing to it since Intel supplies a thermal pad on the HSF and you just need to allign the plastic clips and secure the HSF moving the plastic levers down as you indicate. What does it read in BIOS?

I have several Asus mobos and when I tried using Asus Probe, I got inaccurate temp readings...

MBM is a really nice FREEWARE monitoring app.

The Thermaltake Xaser III case has a temp monitor on the front of the case. I checked this temperature with the one in the bios and they are within 1 degree of each other.

This sucks.. I really hope I am not going to burn the chip. I mean it's not over the 75 degree limit but still... it's getting close.

Any other thoughts?

Remove that thermal pad and put some artic silver 3 on it if you haven't already, make sure that Heatsink is installed properly with enough pressure on the processor.

I guess I will have to do that. I just thought that the stock heatsink etc should keep it cooler than that. So when I take the thermal pad off, do I have to take off that silver tape as well? The black pad scrapes off but there's still a silver tape left there.

My buddy got the same IK1100 motherboard but he got a 3.0C chip and his came with a heatsink that has a copper core and it also came with thermal paste!! I was kinda pissed off to find that mine didn't have that.. do the 3.0's really get that much hotter?
