problems connecting to AIM

So my sisinlaw pretty much only downloads music and uses aim. She has a sony computer p4 2.8, 512 MB. Internet is comcast cable. She can get on the net with internet explorer and most sites are accessible. But neither AIM or any of the AOL websites will let her connect, it's like the IP is being blocked.

I ran all the spyware removers and adware/virus removal tools. Not sure what else to try and she is completely lost if it's not AIM or limewire.

Would she be ok with having a fresh installation of Windows done? If so, that's what I would do. Be careful not to plug the computer into Comcast cable at all until the fresh Windows installation has Service Pack 2 installed (which means you have to have the full SP2 installer saved onto CD in advance before beginning the reinstall of Windows).

thanks, i was hoping not to have to do that. If it comes down to it i can, but if there are any other suggestions I would appreciate it.
