Hey, I'm trying to fix my friends laptop. His problem is that whenever he tries to browse, he has to type in "http://" in the URL (for every page). He can not just type in for example: www.cnn.com or newegg.com; "http://" has to preceed the whole thing in the url.

How can I fix this?? Its really annoying have to always type in http:// infront of any site he goes to.

Thanks for any help you can give us.

edit:
Here's his system:
IBM ThinkPad
Celeron 1.8G
WinXP Home
IE6 (what came with XP)

Have you tried another browser? If that doesn't work, get hijackthis and cwshredder. If it does, try running adaware or spybot search and destroy.

You could also try enabling IE to check if it's the default browser the next time it is started. When it starts up again, make sure you click 'Yes' and tell it not to ask again. Another app may have taken control of you URL handler.

Update:

OK, I just ran Adaware and removed all the spyware but I still have the same problem. I installed Opera web browser and it works perfectly. I can type in ex: www.cnn.com and it goes straight to the page with no delays.

With Internet Explorer, I type in www.cnn.com and it waits for like 30seconds before it actually goes to the web page.

This is really strange why IE delays before it goes to the web page.

Help!

In IE, go to Tools-> Internet Options... -> "Connections" Tab -> LAN Settings...
Uncheck "Automatically Detect Settings".

That might do it for you.
