Problems booting w/ HP printer plugged in

A question for y'all: just installed WindowsXP, reinstalled the latest drivers for my HP Photosmart P1000 printer, and it works, that's not the problem, but the box won't boot up when it (the printer) is plugged into the computer. It's a USB set-up and it has a smartmedia card reader, so it's not a typical LPT1 installation.

So does anyone know what's going wrong here, and how to fix it?

Thnx,
Logan

The system *does* post. The windowsXP Pro screen comes up, then it goes black like it always does before loading the desktop. However, when the printer is plugged in the scrren stays black, and windows never loads. If I let windows load and then plug the printer in, it works just fine. Pretty damn odd eh?
