Hi I just finished putting together my computer yesterday and when I tried to boot up the computer it turns on and does 4 long beeps and then just turns off. It looks like it starts to check out all the components...the cdwriter (Teac 12X CD bunner) lights up then my Toshiba DVD player lights up and after that it just stops.
I have tested all of the components connected to the motherboard on another machine and they all work properly. I even tried only installing a few components and it still does it. The fan just flutters a little when I start it up...(I've disconnected the fan) And it still just does 4 beeps and then stops. I have no clue what is wrong.

But here are the components of it:
2 40 gig maxtor harddrives
1 maxtor adapter card for the harddrives to make it operate faster
1 philips soundcard
1 matrox marvel g400-tv graphics card
1 Toshiba DVD Player
1 Teac Burner
1 Sony Floppy Drive
Oh the Processor is 1.2 gigs speed
I have 3 different ram sticks 2 for 256 and 1 for 64 ...they are cas 2 I believe

There could be more, but I can't remember anything else.

So anyone have a clue as to why it does this? I have been racking my brains all day to figure it out...read the whole manual. I'm positive everything is in the right position and place...could it just be a damaged processor or motherboard?

Please anyone help me!!!

Try to lookup the beebcode (there is mostly somewhere a list to be found, and if you're lucky it is in the manual)

but my guess is that it is that single stick of 64 meg mem, windows 98 even refuses to recognise memory that is higher than 512 and unly uses the lower 512 meg memory of yer sys, neglecting thus the 64 meg ...

also I can give u as tip that a mobo install should happen one for one, start with the minimum of components :
thus only proc, vid card, ONE stick of memory, soundcard, floppydrive, ONE CD/DVD drive and disk drive

then after win installation (or linux or whatever) put in one component at a time this will take a lot of time but if it goes wrong at a step you'll know exactly at which step it went wrong and what's causing the problem ...

thats just my tips for a good installation
(hey I might be wrong .. my first mobo install still has to come and I never installed a flipchip before (non slotted chip)

<< Is the fan connected to the proper header? If its not on fan1 it won't start. >>

Yes that might be it ... the fan connector might be hard to find but it is the one that is the farthest away from the processor (thus the closest against the memory banks)

if the MB doesnt detect at least 2000 tics in the fan RPM counter then it refuses to boot

Hi thanks for responding everyone.
I have tried it with only one 256 ram and both of the 256 ones and just the single 64 mb ram and it still does the same thing. I wish I could get up to the part of installing the operating system...but it shuts down before I can even try.
I have the fan connected in the right position it is the one closest to the ram. I made sure I confirmed it with the picture.
I also tried just connected the bare minimums and it still does the same thing. If anyone has anymore suggestions it would be really appreciated. I'm beginning to think it's just the motherboard b/c I tried everything else.

P.S . What's a beebcode? What does it do? How can it help me with my problem?

Thanks again and Please if anyone knows what's wrong please help :)

does it still give the beebs ??
did u install the memory in the mem1 bank (normally that doesnt matter but u can never be sure ..)
I think it is something else than the memory cous changing the setup didnt do a thing ... but I really cant think of what it could be ... did u try changing your ide cables ... cous u might be running with a faulty startup disk ...
did u try booting on a win bootdisk ?

well i'm out of ideas I think ...

The system doesn't get up to checking the a drive so I don't think it's really a problem with the start up disk. I haven't installed windows yet b/c it never gets up to the part displaying dos. It still beeps...no matter what I do. The only thing I can't check out to see if it works is the motherboard and the processor so I guess it's one of those everything else works fine.

hmmm tricky prob .. if your primary HD (boot harddisk) is completely blank (unformatted/partitioned etc ..) then u should boot from CDrom (set the boot sequence to CDrom-C-A) and u should make sure that the drive is on the primary ide channel (ide-1) and set in as master (jumpers on the back of the disk) ...
and maybe configure it internally in the bios (many bioses have the disk on autodetect but it might be that your disk cannot be autodetected, thus u have no bootdisk ...)

Well i'm again out of ideas but more may popup ...

thanks to the faqs supplied by dihardware (thanks !!) I've been able to find your beebcode (four long beebs u said ....)

copy from faq :

Four beeps then machine shuts down - with BIOS version WW or WZb00 - this is because these version of the BIOS will shut down your machine if no fan tachometer signal is detected on FAN1 header. Make sure you attach a fan to this header! BIOS WZb01 and later have this functionality disabled by default, and it can be enabled in the BIOS.

so it seems that the four beebs is that your fan isnt connected .. (or isnt connected in the FAN-1 connector)

Yes, with the kt7a you need to ensure that the motherboard is checking the hsf correctly or it will shut down automatically.

Also, what kind of power supply are you running?
