Problems after Overclocking

I ran Prime95 for 14 hours STRAIGHT with absolutely ZERO errors, I ran memtest86 for 11 hours straight with no errors. I open up 3dmark05 and try to run it and my pc turns off automatically.

If I try to run a game like Irth Online or Guildwars, my PC automatically turns off. No BSOD, No lock up, it just turns off. Any ideas on what this could be? I haven't overclocked my video card at all yet.
 
Probably a software conflict with the game and/or the benchmark. Remove all items from MSCONFIG's STARTUP tab and reboot PC. Retest.
 
Bummer🙁 That sounds like power supply giving up on you Joe. When you put a load on the GPU is when it draws the most power.

Probably need to up the PS

If it were a GPU problem, you would get blue screens and reboots. The fact that its just shutting off is a very strong indication that its PS.

Doh! If I set back to default settings it works fine. Couldn't I just lower my overclock settings some? Also I haven't even overclocked my video card yet and it's doing it. So by overclocking my CPU and then running a game it will cause my PSU to buckle?
 
It makes sense that it would be the PSU. Ugh this sucks. I knew I should have bought a 500W. I would hate to not have my PC up and running waiting for newegg to RMA mine and charge me 15% restocking, and then have to wait for them to ship me a better one. Do I HAVE to use Antec? Can I use other brands like RealMax?
 
You don't have to use Antec, but I would suggest a respectable company. Included in this list are Antec, Thermaltake, OCZ, Aspire, Cooler Master, and Enermax.

Also, considering the power you're gonna be needing, get at least a 450W PSU. 🙂
 
Based on your hardware list, it does not appear that you are overloading the PS. Almost ANY quality 400w PS will do the job. If you encounter shut down problem will ALL the games, then perhaps you're not feeding sufficient juice to the video card.

A powerful video card will come with an extra power connector. Use it.
 
On my motherboard there is a "EZ Plug Connector" ...I have a 4 pin molex plugged into it but I have it disabled in the BIOS because I didn't know what it was for exactly.

Is this the plug that feeds juice to the video card? I am only running 1 6600GT right now.
 
i don't know what the ez plug is for. it must say something in your manual?

i do know those symptoms though. when i first got my dfi sli-dr i could oc to a point and then bang. boot into windows and i'd get an error message that my pci-e card could not be started.
when it did boot properly 3dmark would bsod on me or just plain freeze.

replaced the x-clio 450 with the tpII5500 and no problems.
 
Yea I know but now when I overclock it gets to windows but then the computer just shuts itself off automatically. This one guy I know thinks the PSU is dying. I'm going to order a better one tonight.

I think I might have damaged my PSU by overloading it. I had my system OC'd to 2.75ghz (275x10) and when I tried playing a game and/or running 3dmark05 graphics test my system automatically shut itself off. I set everything in bios back to its defaults and things work fine, but now if I overclock back to my 2.75ghz...system shuts itself off when it first gets into windows.

I am using an Antec Truepower II 430W PSU and I guess 430W wasn't enough to overclock my system to 2.75ghz AND run graphic intensive games. GPU drawing all that power. My gigabyte geforce 6600GT doesn't have a power connector like people think it should. The only power connector that's on my board is a 12V connector , the main 24 pin connector and this 4 pin molex connector that says EZ Plug but that's for when I use 2 graphics cards in SLI mode which I'm not. I only have one.

Im ordering a 500W PSU tonight or tomorrow.
 
For reference, my AMD 64 3000 winchester overclocked to 2.3GHz, NEC3520 burner, 1GB RAM, USR5610B modem, and X300 video card pull about 200watts at full load. A powerful video card will add another 60watts, which is certainly within the limit of a 300w PS. It is possible that you PS is overheating. The output on a PS can drop by more than 50% when subjected to high temp.

Look for a PS that's rated to deliver the goods at 40C, not 25C if your case does not vent well.

My temps are fine. According to Speedfan under 100% load, CPU: 42C, MB: 34C, Chipset: 45C, Harddrive: 29C

I think the problem is that I run a 6600GT and it has no power connector on it and it's using the same rail that the rest of my system is on. I have a Antec TruePower II 430W dual rail PSU with 17A on each rail. Problem is that my entire system wants to use 1 rail instead of splitting between the 2. So it's getting overloaded. And now I think my PSU is damaged because even at stock settings now, when I boot to windows my pc shuts itself off after like 30 seconds. One time I was in BIOS for about 3-4 minutes and the PC shut itself off. It's either overheating or damaged because it got overloaded I presume when I tried running games.

See I had overclocked my system to 2.75ghz and ran prime95 and memtest86 for HOURS on end. Probably about 24 hours total for both prime95 and memtest. No errors, No problems. Well, I didn't test 3dmark05 or run any games yet and I tried to overclock my gigabyte geforce 6600GT card. All I upped it to was 505/1005 from the stock settings of 500/1000. When I did that it was fine, but when I tried to run 3dmark05 my machine turned itself off automatically. I booted back up and tried again, turned off again. So I thought it was my overclocking of the cpu, I went back to 500/1000 and I went back to default settings in BIOS..booted back into windows and 3dmark05 ran fine. Games ran fine. Then I tried overclocking it back to 2.75ghz and my pc turned itself off after trying to boot into windows. So I figured I must have damaged the cpu or mobo or something, but people were telling me that it's probably my PSU is dying now because it got overloaded.

I was going to get a 500W Single Rail PSU.
 
the only problem with that psu is that it has pretty low effeciency, which means it will get hot, which means it wont be able to put out all the power it can. but, it should definately be enough. good luck.

Zebo said it was a good one to get. Is it going to be good enough to overclock my system back to 2.75ghz and play my games? Or is it going to get too hot? I already ordered it from NewEgg.
 
It could be that your pci locks aren't working correctly. I had the exact same problem on my Neo4 board. I could Prime and memtest all day long but as soon as I tried to run a 3D app or mess around in the files too much I'd get a bsod. I tried everything I could think of and finally narrowed it down to the pci locks with the help of some of the guys on the forum. I RMA'd the board and got a DFI. Absolutley no probs with the same hardware which leads me to believe that it was in fact the pci locks malfunctioning.

If my logic is correct, the reason Prime95 and Memtest would run with no probs is because those programs really don't access the hdds/vga card that much if at all. Not sure if that's the problem but I'd hate to see you frustrated when you get a new PSU and it doesn't turn out to be the issue.

i never used one but it certainly looks strong enough.

Thanks for the info. My system actually doesn't get BSOD's. It just automatically shuts off. If I had any motherboard, video, ram or cpu problems...from what I have been told then I would get those BSOD's , freezes and lockups or random system restarts. However my system just shuts off which points to a bad or going bad PSU. Some Antec PSU's are pure crap with the rails.
