Problems after CD-RW install. (Need Help!)

During the Black Friday Best Buy sale, I purchased the Norcent 48x cd-rw, I only just decided to install it in my fathers computer (1ghz tbird on a a7v133, 648megs pc-133, 2 hard drives, c: with a copy of windows 98 on it (not used to boot to) and d: with windows xp installed. I set the Norcent to slave, just like the previous hp 8x burner was set at, and installed it on the same cable then powered on, before beginning to boot xp (after it asked if I wanted to boot to windows 98 or xp) it came up with a msg that \windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt, then it told me to try a repair at the recovery console. I cannot do a repair installation , I accept the user terms, then select d:\ (the drive with xp on it) but there is no option for repair installation. I can boot into windows 98 fine unfortunately I cannot access my d:\ because I formatted it with NTFS. I tried swapping back the old cd-rw, no go, I am at a loss for what I should do. Any ideas?

Well nevermind, I backed up the registry like it suggested, and deleted the old files, I did all of part 1 then went to reboot, and I go to boot into safemode, it starts booting, lists all the files it will need, then just hangs, can't do anything else... Any ideas?

what I would do:

Remove the XP HDD.

Install fresh copy of XP on the 98 drive.

Re- install XP HDD

back up important files

set up as desired.

Yeah was thinkin about going that route, hopin I can get the MS fix to work, if not I will have to do it that way. Thanks for the input 🙂

beat with a 10 pound sledgehammer, then buy a replacement system?

I am at a loss for not being able to get to the "repair" option....

Yeah I know - I backed up the data to an 80 gig hdd I had on one of my other systems - gonna try to dirty install, if it fails, at least I can restore 🙂
