I've recently been encountering a problem with my Windows XP pro and I can't seem to figure it out. It happens intermittently but enough times to call it a pretty serious problem.
When I am navigating my computer using Windows Explorer, when I close the Windows Explorer window (usually by using the 'X' button on the top right corner of the window), my "explorer.exe" task seems to crash and restart...I know this because my taskbar on the bottom disappears and quickly re-appears, and the system tray icons don't all come back.. a sign I remember when you 'close' the explorer.exe process, or when the 'explorer.exe' process isn't responding and you have to end the process.
I have checked my computer for spyware (using ad-aware) and have checked my computer for viruses as well, but nothing has come up. I have tried using System Restore to go to an earlier checkpoint (one of a few weeks back, before all this started happening), and the problem still persists. I have uninstalled every program I installed (only 2 of them) ever since the problem came about.
I also noticed that the same time this problem came about, another weird issue came about as well, and that is that randomly, an IE window (an advertisement) comes up for the Anti-Spyware 2006 edition, with the URL pointing to http://www.web-update.org. I extensively looked to see if that is spyware and if any spyware-removal problems other than ad-aware (ad-aware did not find a problem on my machine) detected something or clean it up but I haven't found anyone else having the same problem.
I am totally out of ideas and am very tempted to, unfortunately, re-format and re-install Windows XP. I really want to avoid that because it would be a day's worth of work that I would really love to avoid if I can.
Any help would be -greatly- appreciated. Thanks in advance.
