Problem with Win 98 machine on network

Okay, I'm working on a 98 machine. Its connected to a network of roughly 8 PC's running 98 and 2k. All the PC's are on a workgroup with file sharing enabled. A router assigns IP's via DHCP. Nothing fancy at all.

Okay this particular 98 machine grabs an IP address from the router and can surf the internet and ping external sites all day long. However, it cannot see any of the other machines on the network at all. It cannot browse their network shares or ping them. They do not show up in network neighborhood; it does see itself. It has a fresh install of Windows 98 on it with the following things in network properties:

Client for MS Network
3Com fast etherlink
Dial up adapter
Netbeui -> 3Com fast etherlink
Netbeui -> Dial up Adapter
TCP/IP -> 3Com fast etherlink
TCP/IP -> Dial up Adapter
File and print sharing for MS networks

The machines require the DNS settings to be entered but they are entered and correct.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Are you using Active Directory on the 2k machines? There is a program called adclient that may help. Also are the other machines with 98 freshly installed as well or have they been up and running on the network for a while?

No active directory on the 2k machines and the other 98 machines have been on the network for awhile.

Do the other machines have netbeui installed? Obviously TCP/IP isn't working to communicate PC to PC but is working as your Internet Protocol. Have you tried to assign a static address? What subnet mask are you using? I'd be willing to bet this has to do with DHCP before anything else.

Netbeui is not installed on the other machines. I have not tried assigning a static IP address because I can release and renew the IP all I want. I can see the router (acting dhcp server) fine, (That is the only thing I can ping/see on the network though) so a dhcp problem isn't something that popped into my head. Subnet mask is just 255.255.255.0. Its a simple network config with nothing special at all.

I would try to install netbeui on another win98 machine as that requires no advanced configuration and usually works. Also you might want to check your routing tables (I'm sure you probably have thought of that) but there may be an error somewhere in those. Also how is your machine set to logon? Such as Windows Logon, Domain Logon etc... make sure you use the same logon for the problem machine as you do the working machines

The machine logon is set for client for MS network. These machines are not on a domain. And no, I have not checked the routing tables. How does one do that in 98? Thanks for the help so far!

i believe entering the route command from the 98 command prompt, followed by print, delete and other various switches. This can determine why or why not you are able to get someplaces and not others. If route does work on 98 (haven't used it in awhile, certified on 2000) then use the "route print" command and post your results for analysis.

No problem at all, happy to help!
