Problem with video drivers?

I'm having some problems with my video drivers. I built a new PC and everything is running relatively smoothly except for this one problem.

I installed the latest forceware drivers for my GeForce 8800GS. It's recognized as an 8800 GS in my device manager, yet still refuses to let me change the resolution or color quality. I'm using a plug and play monitor (same monitor I used in my last build which worked fine).

What could the problem be? It seems like it should run flawlessly since it's a clean install, as all my other builds did.

Is there some sort of special thing I need to do for PCI-Express that I didn't have to do with AGP? I've never used a PCI-Express card. I went into my BIOS and loaded optimized defaults to hopefully ensure that anything wasn't degrading the speed of my PCI-Express bus, but that did not work.

I've tried re-installing and re-downloading the drivers, rebooting each time it asked.

try a different driver. (i had the same problem on my 7900GT)

Hah, yes I am new to nVidia. All my other cards have been ATI. I was looking on the website and found the "driver archive", but I didn't find any forceware drivers there. Am I just being dumb or do I get different drivers elsewhere?

I don't *think* I need drivers for my monitor, do I? I've never installed it any other time I reformatted (when I had my X800 pro AGP card).

Ok. I've tried two more sets of drivers. I installed an earlier version that I found from a while ago on a flash drive (it was for my brother's 6800GT), and I also tried the drivers that were included with the card on CD. The ones on the CD let me change the resolution and color quality, but it still does not behave like the card should; it's very choppy when scrolling or moving a window.

I've had this happen to me before. There's probably a driver conflict with default vga drivers, old drivers and new one. I would manually delete all registry and uninstall all drivers and reinstall drivers.

Did you remember to install the motherboard drivers first? When you look in device manager, are there any issues?

Which motherbaord drivers would I need? I bought the mobo used with no manual or CD. I went to the site and downloaded the LAN driver but that's it; should I need to install other mobo drivers (well to fix my GFX problem)?

No. There are no suspicious things in device manager. It says the device is working properly and that the driver is correctly installed.

Thanks!!! This is exactly what the problem was. I found a guide on how to remove the video card driver entries and followed that. I re-installed the latest drivers from nVidia and voila! It works. 🙂

Thanks for everyone's help. Now onto the problem of why my hard drives won't show.
