problem with video card

I am trying to install a new video card that I got from a friend. The problem is that there is now model number or anything the fcc # that I tried to use to get the drivers, didnt work either. I am not sure what to do. I think it is a nvidia card because that is the only name that I saw on the card. When I plug in the card it gives me straight vertical lines on the whole screen. And it does not go away. I tried to load the drivers from the nvidia page but that is not working. Does anybody have and ideas or tips.

thanks in advance

It sounds like you have a system that runs fine with another video card and you plug this one in and all you see are lines...correct?
The thing is, on bootup, the bios screen should come up and after that the OS will detect it and ask for drivers as it runs generic drivers...if all you see are lines through all of the boot process then I would say the video card is probably toast.

Check the cable connection and reseat the card and even try it in another system. It may be the MB can't supply enough power or some other strange problem.

i had the lines on the screen happen to me once. i had orfder a voodoo5000 and when i installed it brand new, i got lines. i put it in my roommates comp, same thing. ended up card was bad...

maybe...
