Problem with Umax scanner

I just installed my Umax Astra 3400. I upgraded to Win XP and downloaded all the needed software and drivers. I installed the software and drivers then hooked up the scanner, then I also tried hooking up the scanner and then installing the drivers. Well the scanner is listed in device manager and is working properly according to it. It also has the green power light on, on the front of it. But yet the little scanner icon in the taskbar has a red circle with a line through it, when i right click on it and do a scanner test it gives me an error saying
Scanner Access Fail

Solution
Can Not find Umax scanner,Please check the folowing items
1. The scanner is not power on and ready
2. Your scanner is not power on before your system start.

What does this mean and how do I fix it. The only USB port I could reach with the short cord was the one on the back of my game theater XP, could that be causing this probelm?

make sure it's not plugged in to a power strip,
also i think the ports on your game theater are fire wire

Obviously the ports on the GTXP are USB or I wouldn't have been able to connect the scanner to it at all. What is wrong with plugging the scanner into a power strip? I read something about that on the umax website. I did have mine plugged into a surge protector since I have no other open plugs, I will have to figure something out. Thanks
