Problem with speed of connection on network

My previous network (DSL with DHCP) used to be three computers behind a linksys router. Now, I recently built a computer ( very high quality), and I switched one of the other computer's LAN cable and put it into the new computer. When I did this, the connection slowed to down to a HORRIBLE pace, and this affected all computers. Once I switched it back to one of hte other comps, it went back to regular speed.

Specs:

Antec Sonata w/ TruePower 380W (24A on 12v)
MSI Neo2 Platinum board
2x 512MB Corsair Value Select PC3200
Seagate 200GB Barracuda drive (set to SATA3 controller)
Asus 16xDVD/48xCD drive
NEC 3500A DVD+-Burner
Sapphire Atlantis Radeon X800XT
Chaintech 7.1 Channel PCI Soundcard
AMD Athlon64 3200+ Winchester

I'm using the onboard GigaLan connection.

Try changing the auto speed for the onboard nic to 100Mbps Full duplex, etc. to see if there is any improvement. You can do this on the nic properties in the advanced tab under Media type.

I tried changing it around; when I First it put it on 100Mbps/Full Duplex it got a bit faster, but the others didn't give an increase in speed and when I switched it again to 100mbps/full duplex it was just as slow as everything else.

update: I changed the cable to a generic 20ft ethernet cable, then switched it to 1Gbps Full Duplex and restarted, and it's bearable now. I wouldn't say it's up to the speed that it's supposed to: When I click on a link, it hangs for about 1-2 seconds and then loads it up quick. Any suggestions as to what else might be slowing it down?

Edit > Hmm. It was working at about 10 packets sent for every 1 recieved; at about 60,000sent/5800 recieved, it just stopped recieving them. Now it's more like a 1000/1 ratio.

could be, if it wasn't protected/patched.

I think the average infection time of an unpatched/unprotected computer on the internet is about 30 seconds.

Well, I just got a pop-up for a gay porn site, and constant 'SiteHelper' thing for IE.

So how should I go about remedying this? Format the HD? And when I go to reconnect to internet what should I do to be able to protect it and keep it protected?

A virus could also explain why the cable is sending out so many packets while recieving so little.

The other computers don't seem to be infected, so I just need to fix this and hopefully it'll work.

Yeah, sounds software related. Did you have windows updates installed? Firefox also helps protect you, stay off them gay porn sites😉

The XP install disc that I used had SP1 with it; however, I do believe I set that computer as DMZ in the router, so the router firewall really didn't help at all. I'm pretty sure I didn't even go on internet except to here and ati.com.

So should I go ahead and format the entire HD?

Hmm, I was looking through Seagate's website, and one of their utilities zero-fills the entire Hard Drive. This will definitely get rid of the virus, so should I do this? I can't seem to format the hard drive through windows since it says there is something using the hard drive.

Formatting shoiuld not be necessary. Install all of the available windows critical updates. Download adaware and spybot and do multiple scans. Also run hijackthis to see what is starting up with your machine.

Well, I worked with it a bit, have about 5 anti-virus programs and 10 different firewalls to go through, but at least it's working at the correct speed.

It's set to Auto-Negotiation for the auto-speed of the onboard NIC: Should I change it, or leave it at this?
