Problem with sound

I am relaying this question for a friend. He said he is having problem with hearing any sound when he goes to YouTube and sometimes some Myspace profiles. He says its something with "midi" format.

Any idea how to fix this problem?
 
I did some research and it says he needs to download Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synthesizer but I cant find it anywhere not even microsoft.

He also told me when he goes to Sounds & Audio Devices Properties under the sounds tab he is unable to play the sound samples.
 
The Microsoft Wavetable Synth is normally part of Windows. And, usually, every mobo comes with an alternative. Laptops use a variety of proprietary synthesizers.
