Some times when i turn on my computer and click on ie it gives me the page cannot be displayed. Last week i was having a bunch of problems with my computer with spyware/trojans and such so i reinstalled windows. After reinstalling it worked fine then the next day I kept getting the page cannot be displayed. I checked all my settings and everything was good so i changed the ethernet cable from the router to the modem and it worked. Well today when i started my computer i got the message. I reset my router and my connection worked. I cant figure out if its the router or ethernet on my computer or maybe even the modem.

Does it only happen under heavy network usage? Like 3 torrents downloading at once? If so it could well be the router choking. How are your pings to the outside world? You could try reflashing the firmware on the router and modem to gain a bit of performance, get some better gear, or just cut down on the network intensive apps.

If it happens regardless of load it's probably something to do with your viruses. After you reinstalled did you take the nescesary precautions so you don't just become infected again immediately? This means get a good antivirus (Nod32 highly recommended, Norton definately NOT recommended), several antispyware progs (microsoft antispyware, adaware, spybot all good), and a safe web browser (Firefox or Opera, definately NOT Internet Explorer). Even if it does turn out to be the router you need to do all this stuff anyway.

I have no torrents running. I dont know how my pings are. i guess they are ok. The router is a cheap one its a $30 doller net gear. I installed anti-vir, scanned, no viruses. Did a scan with S&D and spyware docter and a few things popped up but it wasnt anything real serious. I installed the kerio firewall and dont think there are any problems with it. Got rid of IE and im using firefox right now. Cant get ms updates, its a copy from a friend . Oh last night everything in IE was loading really slow, after i reset this morning it loads fine. I never tried Nod32. How is Norton Coporate? any good?. I was thinking about getting it.

In my experience having any type of Norton antivirus is almost as bad as having viruses. In fact, it has many of the features of a virus - slows your system, hides parts of itself from the user, impossible to uninstall. :) I like Nod32 mainly because of it's low memory usage and good detection rate. Kapersky and panda are very good too.

Is it slow right now? What is your ping to google.com for example? Run a speed test too. When you have these numbers reset the router and see if that improves things. If so your problem is the router.

ping to google is : sent 4 packets, recieved 3, 1 lost . min 43 ms, max 85 ms, avg 57ms. Used the bandwidth meter on c net and it said 800 kbps. But like 1 half hour before I had to reset agian. It was running really slow and i kept getting the errors. Then it just started going good agian. I'm at a loss. Everything looks good. The lights on the router and modem are fine.

Reset what? The router? or the PC?

If resetting the router fixes it, reflash the firmware.
