Problem with Polaroid 24x CD-RW Drive: Need help

Yesterday I got a CD-RW drive from Polaroid's (Disk Fusion) RMA Dept. The original one created too many freesbies.

I am STILL having problems.

This new drive appears to be from a different OEM / different model. However, the first Audio CD I tried to burn (from MP3s on my HD) became a freesbie (Nero quit burning the second I closed Solitaire, with no other apps running).

The second Audio CD was successful, but it makes clicking noises in some audio CD players/changers, badly skips in others (like those old LP's), but works OK in some others.

I tried three different types of CD-R disks (TDK, Fuji and Philips).

What the h*ll am I doing wrong?

My setup:

IDE 0 : HD (master) -> HD (slave, Linux, not visible to Windows)
IDE 1 : CD-RW (master) -> DVD-ROM (slave)

Personally I have never heard of a Polaroid CD-RW. Does it support any type of Buffer Underrun Protection technology?

It does. They call it Seamless Link. The drives are sold as "Polaroid". They are made by "Disk Fusion Technology" or something like that. The original drive I had was manufactured in China (or Taiwan).

The one I got as a replacement was manufactured in Malaysia, has physically different appearance and bears a different model number (2410A-089, I do not remember what the original model number was).

Possible problems could be:

1) Bad media - Tried 3 different brands

2) Bad drive - Both the original one AND the replacement?

3) Computer too slow - 800MHz AMD T-Bird with 512 MB of memory?

4) IDE problems - any suggestions?

5) Burning too fast - Trying 24x, should I drop the speed?

6) ?????

I have one at work and it worked like a charm till the other day when I tried to open it and it did nothing. I'm guessing the power plug came undone, I hope. Won't be sure till I get a chance to open the case and take a look. In any case, I had no problem with it burning. I always burn at a slower rate, since I usually burn something and then go and do something else while it's working. You could try burning at a slower rate and see what happens. I find it hard to believe you got 2 bad drives, but it could happen. If burning at a slower rate doesn't help any then I would try burning without any applications running. I normally don't, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it or not... wouldn't hurt to check. If that fails, then get ANOTHER drive and remember"3rd times the charm" 😀

I modified the config.sys file (or some other config file the name of which is slipping my mind) to add DMABuffer = 64 (or something close to it).

I am now able to create flawless DATA disks on any media at any speed. This is confirmed by Nero's "verify" feature. However, I am still having problems with Audio CD.

Last night I created a ONE-SONG 4:25 min Audio CD on PNY media at 20x. When I listened to the newly burned CD, it appeared to "skip" between the 2nd and 3rd seconds of the song. I tried it on all audio CD players in the house as well as on the CD-RW drive itself. It skips everywhere.

It just blows my mind. Was it a faulty audio extraction from the original CD by Nero, or a faulty recording by the drive? I cannot pinpoint the source of this problem and cannot, under these circumstances, be sure of the CD-RW drive's reliability.
