Problem with Plextor 12/10/32A and CloneCD

I get weird problem, whenever I start burning a cd, my computer just crashes. The screen becomes blank, and the burning process doesn't even start. Any suggestions? I'm using Windows ME.

Maybe try upgrading your drive's firmware. Latest version is 1.07 (which also boosts DAE speed from 24X to 32X)

Also check your ASPI version...

Mine also was working fine until I added the drive, but it was a cheap no name 300 watt ps. I also have a geforce 2 card which is a dog when it comes to power usage.

Do you have the latest ASPI layer?
Is EZCD creator also installed?

I hinting at getting one and removing the other.

A list a hardware, slave/master config, IRQ conflicts would also help.

EZCD can cause problems, but the worse is directCD. Make sure that's not running in the background if you have it installed. Also, did you try burning in win98se?

Direct CD was disabled, and it still crashed. Oh well, I guess I'll resort to using BlindWrite, even though it sucks.

EZCD is installed. Should I try uninstalling it, and then try again? As for directcd, I closed it before I started burning - it didn't help.

Btw, where do I get the lattest ASPI layer?

i have not had the problem with the combo, though i don't even use cloneCD that much... actually, i've only used it a handful of times.

Reports suggest that Adaptec software doesn't coexist well with other software. The dreaded Microsoft disease where it tries to take over everything.

I'd uninstall the Adaptec crap first fully even going into the registry if need be. Your ASPI layer should be fine but if you are still having problems then you can look up ForceASPI on the 'net or probably over at Elaborate Bytes

It will allow you to update your layer to the latest version, although it's probably unnecessary.

If you are still having problems then i'd look at updating the firmware of your Plex if you haven't already. That solve many potential problems.

Another thing to check out is IDE driver updates through your mobo manufacturer. That solved my CloneCd/Plex problem outright.

The last thing - i'm very wary about Win ME as it's buggy as heck IMO. Many problems with software/OS conflicts which has pissed me off to no end trying to troubleshoot my uncle's comp with Win Me and PowerQuest software. Just brutal.

I'd go back to Win98 and try that out and see if you can burn fine. Also check the above link for the Forums and see if there is any other info around. Also check the UseNet alt.comp.periphs.cdr newsgroup for info. Lots of stuff there.

Good luck.
