Problem with playing AVI files

How come when I use PowerDVD 6 to play avi files, it plays it all laggy and stutterly but when I use VLC player, it plays it all smooth and fine. Is there something wrong here? I don't get how it would work fine on VLC and not on PowerDVD 6. I don't want to use VLC because it doesn't support 5.1 surround sound speakers and the sound quality on it sounds like shiet. What could be the problem? When I try playign the same AVI file on WMP10, it stutters and lags the whole time also.
 
no idea but powerDVD just does not work on my comp anymore, no matter whati do the video is black, i get audio but no video, ive been useing WMP10 and Zoom Player

and no its not a Codec issue because it happens with dvds
