when using either of these programs they seem to be taking up all connections and drastly slowing internet connectivity down, im on cable.

im also behind a router.
any thoughts?

Well if you have your uploads turned on..... and have people randomly download from you,, it will slow your connections down.

I used to have one-way cable.. and if anybody downloaded from me.... my internet connection would almost be at a standstill.

I'd suggest you download an application like TCPView and look at the sockets that are being opened on your computer. Or, use P2P software that only lets you open sockets with your friends, not with strangers.
