problem with new SATA hard drive

Just got my Seagate SATA hard drive today from newegg. Goal was to add it to my main system, replacing the IDE WD I have in there now. I connected the drive(to SATA0), booted up, didn't see anything in the bios about the new drive. Loaded XP and looked in device manager and saw the new hard drive. Went to Seagate's website and downloaded their DiscWizard Utility. I was able to copy all the contents from my old drive to the new one. Later, I went back and did a fresh install of xp which recognized the seagate(had to load mb drivers for sata controller). Now when I boot up, I'm given an option to chose which XP to start.

The problem is I don't see any way to make the SATA hard drive my boot device, since there is no option in the bios when selecting one. From what I've read, some have an "other" option but I do not. Others have tried SCSI, but it dosen't work either. I made sure "Serial-ATA 2(Internal PHY)" is set to Enable and RAID is disabled.

The motherboard is a CHAINTECH VNF3-250 with "SATA RAID" (I can use a single SATA drive correct?). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

edit: motherboard manual is of no help, just details about windows installation.

What happens if you disconnect the IDE drive and boot?

I agree that manual is nearly worthless.

It just hangs at "Verifying DMI Pool Data", since there isn't a proper boot device selected.

I fooled around with the RAID settings, it detected the drive, but I haven't figured a way to make it bootable.
Somebody must have this board, are there any options under the boot selection for SATA drives normally? I just have hd0..3, floppy, cdrom, lan, scsi, usb etc....

wait, so in the bios, your SATA drive isn't showing up on the boot options? Because it should be there under boot options...you don't necessarily select RAID or SATA, as much as it should list your drive there for possible boot options!

correct... I've since disabled RAID

Im pretty sure you need to install the RAID driver from the motherboard software. you can download it at the manufacturers' site. Put it on a floppy and when you load xp boot tot he cd and hit f8 or f6 to install third party raid drivers pop the disk in and hit enter and it sould install drivers

First thing I would do at this point is reset the CMOS. Follow the instructions provided. Many board manufacturers now want the battery removed in conjunction with the moving of a jumper. The hanging at "Verifying DMI Pool Data" is what's prompting me to ask you to do that.

Keep track of the BIOS settings you have, because you have gotten the board to recognize the drive. You will need to duplicate those settings after the CMOS reset.

If it will not boot at this point, I would suggest a fresh install of XP. It sounds as if you have nothing to lose but some time in this regard. I mean that it sounds like you had done a fresh install prior (i.e. no data to lose).

Here's a link from the Chaintech site regarding SATA drivers and an XP install. It sounds as if you have that all figured out, but no harm in looking. It would be nice if they included this info with the manual. Oh well.

And leave that IDE drive disconnected until you get this up and running.

Well, I did another fresh install, but this time without the IDE drive connected, and it works.... The bootable device is listed as HD0. Maybe there is a issue with IDE/SATA drives with this board, but thanks for the help.
