Hey I just got a new 160GB SATA Harddrive but when I went to format it using the Windows XP Pro setup it only saw it as a 130GB. I went ahead and formated it thinking that maybe it would be the full size when I was done. However it still shows as 130GB 🙁 The bios shows it as a 163.7GB so I dont know whats wrong. I dont have a windows disk with SP1 on it. I am using the latest bios on my Asus P4P800 Deluxe. The new harddrive is a Maxtor one Thanks for any help! 🙂
 
The easiest fix is to just FDISK it into a 30GB C: for the OS and a 130GB D: for the programs and files. This is necessary as Win98 has a 137GB upper limit. I you are installing WinXP then it will allow you to partition it as part of the install process or you can leave it in one giant chunk.
 
A look through Google suggests that your IDE controller might not support 48-bit logical block addressing. That would explain the 130GB limit. Have you updated your BIOS? If so, you'll probably have to resort to using Maxtor's MaxBlast software to make the disk's full capacity formattable.
