Problem with new 9800 np

Just got this card, thinking it's a 9800, and it shows as 9800 pro in the Device Manager. If I view the Chipset button on WCPUID it shows as a ATI RADEON 9700/9500 Series.

EDIT/ Also, I'm having this problem with quake maps. So far I am not impressed with this card. The frame rates in quake aren't any more impressive than with my GF2 Ultra.

EDIT2/ Forget the WCPUID thing. I'm pretty sure I have a 9800np.

Well obviously it's a problem with WCPUID. Try a newer version and see if that fixes it.

As for the quake performance - why would you buy a Radeon 9800 for Quake 3? That game runs fine on the original GeForce! The whole point of the 9800 is that you can crank up the AA/AF on the card, and that it plays newer games much faster than your GF2 can!

Well, actually I bought the card in anticipation of HL2. Good point about Quake3, that software has pretty much been exploited for some time now by GF cards. BUT why do I have these geometric lines in my maps? Is there a setting that needs turning off or on?

Didb you run drive cleaner to remove all traces of the Nvidia card first?
I would recomend using drive cleaner and uninstall nvidia drivers with it . then uninstall the ATi drivers and reinstall the 3.7's
Driver Cleaner found Here

Don't worry it's a Non-Pro.

Thanks for that confirmation amigo.

Now I'm trying to sort out this "black seam" problem where the skybox textures are supposed to "clamp".

It seems this has something to do with ATI following strict OpenGL guidelines, whereas Nvidia did not, allowing a work-around of sorts when this problem comes up when a map isn't created perfectly, and that's why most GF cards never experience this (but I'm still learning about this matter...not sure what all the details are yet). I just wished I didn't have this problem and I'm surprised that I haven't seen it reported often.

What the most popular 9800 cat drivers?

The most popular cat drivers, in my opinion would be the Omega 3.6 Cats (control panel/overclocking/tweaking utils built into one driver) or the official ATI 3.7 Cats (in which case you have to download the 3.7 control panel as well). Both work well for me...

Well I'm on 3.5 now and they work fine, but I still have the black-seams-in-the-skybox problem.

Surely I'm not the only 9800np owner (made by Sapphire btw) that has this problem with Q3 TA? This game is used for benchmarking all the time -- yet I have found only 2 others that have this problem. Just plain wierd.

Any help is appreciated.

I had problems like that, you have to fiddle with the display options that quake offers you. Also make sure vsync is disabled, had few problems with that too.
