I had the exact same problem. I just bought a new system put in the XFX 6600GT without any problems. It worked beautifully for about a week. HL2 worked great. Then, while I was playing HL2, the signal to my monitor cut off. I had to restart. Everything seemed fine but then it happened one more time. From then on I saw the same artifacts as you. All the 2D stuff looked fine, but HL2 and the doom3 demo looked the the pics you posted. In fact, even the pipes screen saver looked like that. I was concerned because I didn't change anything and the card spontaneously stopped working well. I figured it was a problem with the card. So I sent it back to newegg. The new one comes back next week. I'm crossing my fingers that it was just a defective card....though the more I read about the 6600GT, the more it sounds like a systemic problem.

I hope that all it takes is a software patch, but I don't see how it could be a driver problem if the card was working perfectly for a while before it suddenly went bad. Does that make sense to anyone? Plus, my 6600GT was PCI-e and the site implies that it is only a 6600GT AGP problem. I tried to see what driver I was using before i sent it back but I can't find it.

What some people have thought is that it is a heat issue that causes damage to the card, which makes more sense to me. But don't the manufacturers stress test their cards before selling them? The XFX card has a huge fan on top of it and was rated as one of the noisier 6600 GT cards, which implies to me the fan is working hard. I just got my new 6600GT from Newegg....maybe I'll leave the cover off my computer and point the floor fan at it.

I just returned a new XFX 6600gt AGP to newegg.com as well. When playing games the video feed would shut off and I would have to reboot. I downloaded a graphics stress test shareware program (i think called passmark). I ran the simple 3d graphics test and the gpu core temp shot up to over 100^C and the black screen of hard rebooting showed up again.

When I took out the card and examined it more closely, it looked like there was some thermal tape on the core with a copper plate on top of that, with a fan atop the copper plate. BUT it looked like the copper, the tape, and the fan were warped and not making good contact with one another. I'm sure that was to blame for the high temps and the graphics-related lock ups. It seems that given the thermal sensitivity of GPU cores, XFX would have more rigorous quality controls for their heatsink/fan setup.

I will carefully examine the replacement card i get before installing it. Unfortunately newegg.com has placed the 'replacement for same part only' tag on this card. If it looks like like another jury-rigged heatsink fan, I guess I will look into a third-party GPU cooler/thermal adhesive...any suggestions?

I just got my second XFX 6600 gt PCI-E back from new egg. This one works like it's supposed to. I haven't had any problems and I've been trying to stress it so i can return it within the warranty period. So far so good.

Just received my replacement XFX 6600GT AGP 128MB DDR 3. The GPU core temp is 61^C idle. I haven't put it through any tests yet, but it is a full 20^C cooler out of the box than the first one I received. I'll post again after I install some games to give it a workout.
