Problem with my desktop background

I'm using a Toshiba laptop and I went to start it up and I lost my desktop background wallpaper. It was some tropical island, now it's a black screen. I tried selecting another picture from the windows directory, but it won?t let me select anything.

However, I can select a picture from the internet and make it my wallpaper, but then that went away after I turned on the computer.

Any help?! Thanks!

Put all the wallpapers in a different directory, and select them from this new location...

What about losing it when I turn the computer on?

What OS is it? Try turning active desktop off from the control panel.
