Problem with my Cendyne/Acer 24x CDR

I bought the 24x CDRW from Office Max last week. It's the Acer flavor of the burner. Anyway, I made a few burns and everything was fine. So today, I try to burn and read a CD. I put in the blank CD for burning, and it continually tries to read it and I can hear the clicking sound over and over and over again. So I take out the CD. It tries to read for a disc again, hence the clicking sound even when there isn't a disc in. Same goes for trying to read a data disc. The drive is connected as a master ide on a separate promise ata100 ide controller

Is my drive dead? Or is there a fix to my problem?
