Problem with my CD Drive

I'm having a problem with my CD Drive in that when I start up my computer a white blinking underscore on a black background appears before the Windows XP logo screen. Plus, no POST information is displayed. Plus, if I can get into BIOS, the cd drive name is corrupted with random characters. When Windows XP is fully booted I go into Device Manager and find that no CD drive is installed.

Plus, sometimes this happens and sometimes it doesn't.

Things I think could have caused it:
On my system I had installed VMWare Player. Then, I got a Sandisk Cruzer Micro 512 MB USB stick and used that. A short while after that is when this problem started occuring. And no, I didn't have Starforce.

However, since then, I have reformatted my harddrive and reinstalled Windows. But, the problem still occurs.

I'm at a loss as to what I did to cause this and what can be done to solve the problem.
