I recently installed this board with a 1ghz tbird. The problem im having seems to be whenever i play music in winamp. im not sure whats causing this. Im using a diamond mx300 as my dedicated sound card. i disabled on board sound in the bios, and i disabled what was installed in windows too. So im not really sure whats going on. can you guys help me out?

oops.....the comp freezes in winamp. no blue screen, just everything stops

I am assuming you are using the motherboard sound. Try disabling the onbboard sound and plug in a sound card and see if you get the same results. If not, you may have a bad sound chip on the motherboard. You may also want try reinstalling your sound software and winamp only after you have completely deleted it from your system and uninstalled it.

VIA chipsets sometimes have problems with Vortex2 soundcards (MX300). Try downloading the latest drivers. If that doesn't work, try using the onboard sound instead. If you are running Win2k, forget about it, no ones been able to figure out how to get Vortex2 boards to work with Win2k w/o sound going out after a few seconds.

i had a similar problem with the exact same hardware. except that only my winamp would lock up and would refuse to play again until i rebooted. i went back to an earlier version of winamp and the problem is gone.

i had this problem with winamp 2.70 and 2.71 and i was able to find an old installation file of 2.64. it hasn't crashed since.

mx300 never works right with via chipset... i would say go for on-board sound.

moreover, if you have disabled the on-board sound (either in bios of jumper), when installing windows it shouldn't ask you for driver or install anything at all

Before I upgraded my system, I was running a Vortex2 card (specifically, the Diamond MX300) in Windows 2000 with only one problem: DirectSound in Half-Life was screwed up. Other than that, it was fine. Admittedly, this was on an ABit BX6 board. In any case, this just goes to show that the MX300 WILL work in Windows 2000.

Thanks a lot for the help guys. Right now im using the onboard and its working pretty well.

White, where did you get the 2.64 version of winamp? Ive been trying to find it to maybe see if that will work.

Thanks again guys

you can get any version of winamp at winampheaven. however, it seems that after i made that post it jinxed my computer so now the problem has returned. i've also tried other media files that have audio and those locked it up good. so i'm beginning to think that this is not a software problem although there are people at the winamp forums that have this same problem even with SB cards. i might try the onboard sound to see if that helps.

i already tried those and the problems persisted. i just pulled the mx300 and installed the onboard sound drivers and tested it with different types of files. so far it hasn't locked up like it did in the past. i guess it's a problem with the mx300 and the chipset so now i'll look for a new sound card.
