problem with MS Word..

A friend of mine asked me to look at this problem he was having with his computer. He is using MS office 2000 on win 98. The problem is that in MS word, the only thing on the screen is the document window and the ruler at the top. You know how in most programs, there is the command bar at the top, with options like File, Edit, View, Help, etc. Well this command bar is not there. And if you try to type Alt+F, which normally would bring up the file menu, it does not work. Only the hot keys such at CTRL+P for print work. If anyone has any idea how to fix this, please let me know. Because after fooling with it for a little while, I am about to advise him to just reinstall the program. Thanks in advance.

Is there any bar on top?????

If there is right clik in an empty area and select customize, then TOOLBARS. Then make sure the MENU BAR option is clicked...

I forgot...

If there is no bars on top the press alt-V to bing up the view options then select customize. Then make sure the menu bar option is clicked..

You may have accidentally switched to full screen mode, which removes all toolbars and rulers.

Normally, hitting ESC will exit full screen mode. If you do not see the button for switching between modes, then see if you can bring up the full screen toolbar using the customize command.

The program is not in full screen mode. The blue bar is still on top of the screen. it says Microsoft Word, then has the minimize and close buttons. But in the program window, the only thing visible is the ruler. I already tried hitting Alt+V to bring up the view menu, but that doesn't work. None of the ALt+ * menu functions work.

Hey pretty cool,
deleting the registry key fixed the problem. Everything is back to normal. Thanks to all for their input.
