Problem with MPEG files

Argo

Lifer
Every MPEG playback program I use, has the following problem: the video freezes, but the sound goes on playing. Any ideas? I got GTS2 with 6.34 drivers, and a t-bird 800@927

Starting with the basics, are you using the most recent reference drivers for your video card? Also, use dxdiag.exe to check for any problems with DirectX. I suspect that most of your applications require DirectX 7.0a, so check into that.

Is this the only video-related issue you're experiencing? Your Thunderbird 800 @ 927 looks like it may be a nonstandard FSB. If that's the case, the video card may hiccup occasionally (actually, any device could cause problems if the PCI/AGP bus is out of spec). If it isn't a huge hassle, try setting it back to default speed and see if the problem persists.

When the video freezes, can you kill it with a three-finger salute or does the machine hard-lock?

Best regards,
Floyd

K, here are the answers to your questions.

1) It doesn't lock, all I have to do is close WMP 7, and everything is fine
2) I'm using most recent drivers.
3) This doesn't look like video card problem, most probably a codec problem instead.
4) Everything else is rock stable, opengl, d3d games.
5) Dxdiag doesn't report any problems
6) I'm gonna try clocking the fsb back to normal, however, I doubt it's the problem.

Agreed, doubtful going back to default speed will help help considering you have no problems with OpenGL or D3D. I also agree that the codecs are the next order of business. Is the problem with MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, or all of the above? Videos you've created yourself or those downloaded?

I've tried only MPEG2 so far. The files are ok, since they play fine on my roommates computer. I'm almost 100% sure it's a codec. I just have no clues how to fix it.

Windows Media Player Version 7 might be your culprit, i have heard nothing but bad things about that version. You might want to try keeping it closed and using some other mpeg player, i.e. xing mpeg player, powerdvd, WinDvd. If you can get one of the previous programs to play your mpeg files while media player 7 is closed then it is likely the cause of your problem.
😀😎😀

I tried using previous version of media player, as well as Real Player, still no go. It shouldn't really help since they all use the same codec. Furthermore, I tried using my roommates computer who also has WMP7, and it worked fine.
