problem with modem driver?

recently i purchased a new internal modem to replace an old one. after installing the card in mobo slot and updating the driver that comes with the modem, modem works perfectly fine. however, after restarting the comp, device manager shows that the modem is unable to start properly (error code 10). i tried uninstalling the driver and installing the driver again, the modem works fine but problem persist after restarting comp. is thois because of driver conflict from my previous modem? i'm using winxp.

Some modem drivers (often Rockwell/Conexant based) can leave a mess in the Registry that will need to be hand cleaned or there might be a tool or instructions on their site as to how to do the cleanup. I'm assuming you used the Add/Remove software tool to remove the old drivers before installing the new modem.

The steps I follow when removing/installing hardware:
1- shutdown all running software.
2- use Add/Remove or specific tool to remove driver(s).
3- Shut Down computer.
4- remove piece of hardware.
5- Restart and hand clean Registry and/or INF and System directories.
6- Restart and install new hardware per instructions with latest drivers available from mfr's web site.

you might also check that irq 5 is set to reservered in your bios, if you still have problems after zeppers help.

how do i hand clean Registry and/or INF and System directories?? like can u give me a step by step on where to go?
also, where can i find this irq5 in the bios?
my old and new modem are from the same mfr so the drivers has the same name...does this cause conflict too?? cos when i installed the new driver, winxp show it as "driver name #2" in the device manager.

You edit the registry looking for and removing any reference to rockwell or conexant (or whatever your chipset and/or modem mfr's name is).
Be sure to back up your registry before you do it.
. Then go thru the \windows\inf\ and windows\system\ folders looking for files related to the modem and delete them. In my case, they are mohser.inf and mohserw.inf and you can view the .inf file(s) to see a list of installed files and/or registry entries that may need to be deleted. It's always best if you can find a removal tool for the drivers. Look both on the mfr's and chipset makers web sites.

modem is manufactured by prolink with model number 1456PSA. however it used motorola modem driver so it appear in window as motorola sm56 speaker modem.

When I download the driver from here labeled 1456PSA and unzip it, I see a file named clean_up.exe. I'd search your system for that and run it. Sounds as if that will clean up the residual driver traces left behind.
