Problem with Max Payne 2 - unique situation

I've beaten the detective level of max payne 2, and am about halfway through the hard boiled level. I got a new processor and motherboard, so I did the usual windows reinstall. I left the game intact on the drive, and it still runs fine. All my save games are still there also.

However, the game doesn't think I have beaten detective yet. Because of that, the last man standing and hard boiled options aren't available.

Does anyone know what will happen when I beat my save game? Will it unlock Dead on Arrival anyways? Will it unlock hard boiled a second time? Or will it get all confused and not do anything for me and make me play though it yet another time?

Or even simpler, is there a way to remind the game of my progress so far? I am surprised that it lost that when I kept everything else on that drive. It was probably a registry entry or something...

Edit, yes indeed, there are registry entries for Max Payne. There is one called Game level, but I can't make sense about how to change it without screwing something up.

If the game lost its knowledge of your progress based on just reinstalling Windows, then yes I'd assume the registry is to blame. Unless the game creates registry keys related to your progress or stores its savegames separately from the game directory (e.g. under the My Documents folder a la C&C Generals), you wouldn't have had this problem.

I just checked on my system since I have Max Payne 2, and I noticed it keeps your savegames in My Documents. So unless you backed those up, f00bar is the word of the day.

My save games are backed up.

I guess i'll just complete the game at Hard boiled difficulty and see what the game does about it.
