Problem with letter to drive in win98

Hum I guess this is a novice question -- I have a new system (MSI kt3 ultra2 ..) and win98 se --

I have two hard drives each with two partitions:

drive 1 p1 C p2 F
drive 2 p1 D p2 E

I would like
drive 1 p1 C p2 D
drive 2 p2 E p2 F

I'm not sure why win98 gave the weird assignment -- is there an easy way to change it ?

At this point, and I'm assuming you have the OS, programs and data all installed, your only choice would be Partition Magic, as was mentioned. If you don't mind losing everything, you could "fix" the problem by FDISk and changing the "logical" and "extended" definitions that are there. Long story on that but if interested I am sure I could find a web site to help explain it. Keep in mind that you would be starting from scratch and have to reload everything. Even using PM would be "fun" as that would be quite a transformation but I think it could be done. The good news is that since you are still using Win98 you could probably get an older copy of PM (like v.5.0) that would save you a few bucks to say the least.

As the others mentioned, Partition Magic is the easiest way to re-configure your drive(s) but first be sure to back up any data you can't afford to lose. PM is a great uitil package, but even it can have a brain fart, or a power glitch could happen. Better safe than sorry!
Here is how drive letter assignment works:
Primary Partition on Primary Drive =C:
Primary Partition on Secondary Drive =D:
Virtual drives in Extended Partn(s) of Prim Drv =E:, F: etc. (If no Prim Partn on other drvs, then starts at D: ).
Virtual drives in Extended Partn(s) of Sec Drv =Follows after above.
There should not be more than one Primary Partn an any drive unless you are using multiple OSes and have a boot manager to facilitate switching between them. Other drives will be assigned letters following the hard drive partns/virtual drives.
You can make the entire Sec Drv an Ext Partn (Prim Partn not reqired), but you do lose one cylinder of space as Ext Partn can't start on Cyl-0.
Remember that any programs or program files that are already installed in partns other than Prim on Prim Drv may have their Drv letters changed and thus may not work properly. PM does a pretty good job of resynching drv letters, but good to think about while planning the process.

p.s You can get Partition Magic v.7 via Pricewatch for around $25. for a full OEM copy ($35. for a retail box) --perhaps even less if you care to bid on one of the auction sites. So the price isn't prohibitive. No sense messing with an older version that might not be able to handle the new very large drives or different partition types. bh.

Well - so far things (system program/os) are only installed on C - so if I can fix the problem (even if it means lost of data on disk 2) I'd like to do so. Any suggestions ? (other than PM) ?

Any suggestions ? (other than PM) ?
PM would really be your best option unless you want to start over and FDISK both drives. You might be able to just FDISK the second drive as Extended w/partitions but it also could backfire on you and really screw things up.
I think I'd be very careful buying PM (OEM) from some of the retailers on Pricewatch also. Check them out carefully at ResellersRatings.com before you buy. You would be just fine with version 5.0 and up; depending upon what you find for the price you can afford. Version 7.0 is needed for using with WindowsXP though if that's in your plans for later.

Well -- part of the bloody problem is that fdisk that came with my window 98se won't work on the disk. It is an 80gb maxtor. It can't see all 80gigs -- so I used a third party tool that was free (not pm) and it created two primary partitions which as someone alluded to above results in what I have...

Is there a version of fdisk that works ? Ho hum. I tried to fix the problem with that third party tool but not sure it will work. When I look at the disk with fdsik it is clear that fdisk just doesn't work on 80gb drives...

Thanks all. You gave me the needed hints to fix the problem. Disk 1 had two primary and disk 2 a primary and an extended. I deleted the two uneeded primary and all is happy. The thing that still bugs the eep out of me is that fdisk doesn't see the 80gig drive. Oh well at least I was able to fix the mess without reinstalling -- if only win98 was as clever as my 4 year old freebsd. Gee reboot after each device is discovered. What crap is that.
