Problem with Iwill KK266R and Athlon XP1700

I did a search for this and didn't find anything . . .

I am trying to install a Athlon 1700 XP processor on my Iwill KK266R motherboard. The chip is recognized, the post goes fine and the machine locks up somewhere during the boot process into WinXP Pro or Win98SE.

If I put the AthlonC 1.33 processor back in, everything is fine.

I am running an Antec PP403X 400 watt PSU, a CD-ROM, burner, floppy and 3 hard drives. I have also tried the Antec PP352X and PP303X with no luck.

The FSB jumper on the board is set to 133 and the voltage and multiplier in the bios (10/22/01 version) are set to auto.

Anyone have any ideas? Are others getting this processor to run on a KK266R?

Thanks,

Northland

I am using the 10/22/01 BIOS, which I believe is the most current. I will check Iwill.Net to see if they have released a new one.

the 10/22 is the latest for kk266/r and it does add support for Athlon XP you might need to set your CMOS at default settings after clearing....leave in the "Clear" for about 10 minutes with PSU unplugged from wallsocket. Also do the setup with as few as possible devices hooked up, just your basic harddrive, vid card, CDRom, and ram.

The relationship between the XP processors and the KK266 has been gummed over at length in the AMDMB IWill forum. At the risk of seeming a traitor to AT, I'll suggest you give that a glance if you aren't sated here.

It's of interest to me, as I've a KK266R but a pre-XP cpu. I could only conclude it's a mixed bag of problems. Please report your success/failures here as I'm sure more are interested in this.

You definatly need a BIOS update. Here's the site to get the update. You need the October 22nd update. When you download, it will give you instructions on how to do it also.

Check your MB revision number. Early revisions of the board don't seem to be able to run the Athlon XP processor. Later revisions can. YMMV.

Check the Iwill Motherboard forum over at AMDMB.COM for some relevant discussions.

just got the xp 1700+ and installed it in my kk266R yesterday. Installing w2k was pretty darn hard. It kept hanging on the final tasks, registers components etc. Then suddenly it just worked. I had to take out my ati AIW, and my network card, then slowly reinstalled everything. Now my machine randomly crashes. I think it is from my cheap ram, and I will upgrade to something better, cas3 or whatever.

I am using the oct22 bios, raid 0, two 40 gig ibm drives, with 450 watt psu.

If problems keep happening, Iwill get another board 😉

beekman go over to HotDeals forum ...there's a thread locked to the top on a Crucial deal grab a stick of CT32M64S4D7E . 16T ignore the numbers and period after the E this is PC133 cas2 ...have never( out of 19 sticks 🙂 ) had a bad stick from them. Do your testing with only one single stick at a time to determine if you have a bad/weak stick of the ram you already have first tho.
